Keg number 2...like poop

Well - in a moment illustrative of the lives of Thunder and Boomer (what are we, comic characters!?), the brewery achieved new technological feats with our first iChat "brew session." To boot, our communication was motivated by the beginning steps of kegging our IPA - only our second attempt at kegging beer.

For those present, the memories of the first keg of brown ale were....well....not so tasty. We played through the pain, however, and are back in the ring with this flowery, stinging trad IPA.

In other news, since it's been over a year since our last post, the TB family has grown!! Bayley Ash was born - she's beautiful and loved by her sister and parents. She has not yet been knighted (i.e., given a TB name), but has participated in not one, but two brews! The force is strong within her.

We will drink the beer on Saturday, celebrate strange pagan holidays, and laugh like bastards.

Thunder Boomer....hooooo!!

Dylan's Brown Ale

Dylan (a.k.a. The Rook) is rapidly approaching her first birthday, and in preparations for the celebration we brewed a partial-mash brown ale.

Modeled after Smuttynose's Old Brown Dog Ale, the grain bill is as follows:

1# ESB Malt
0.5# Brown Malt
0.5# Toasted American 2-Row
0.5# Crystal 90
0.25# Chocolate

The grains were steeped at 164F for 60 minutes, then sparged with 165F water.

Boil included 1 oz Willamette hop pellets (4.9%) for 60 minutes.

Yeast: Wyeast Activator 1098 (London Ale Yeast)

In other TB developments, "The Boomers" are now official! In a grand celebration that included all members of TB (including Big Brother - formerly the Rook - a.k.a. John Beck), Brian and Jenna were wed and the TB family is going strong!!

Thunder Boomer's Client List

November 2008. How auspicious that it was the last time we posted. This has nothing do to with the lack of brewing activity (we keep tweaking, not tweeting) rather the lack of time to blog.

Since the most recent posting, Obama continues to lead this nation in a direction unfamiliar to the right wing: a listener. Whether BO follows through is another area. But he is listening.

Regarding brewing, TB just expanded our clientele by 100%. From none to one. We secured the bid to brew a Summer Ale (with Grains of Paradise and lemon zest) in lieu of a 40th b-day gift from one spouse to another. TB will use it as a way of expanding our clientele list further.

Summer Ale:

.5 lb of Wheat malt
1 oz Saaz (full hour)
3 .3 lb liquid Wheat malt (30 min)
3.3 lb light malt (15 min)
.25 oz Liberty (15 min)
lemon zest (15 min)
1.5 grams of cracked grains of paradise (15 min)

We will bottle, label and package with customized picture/print for delivery of product.

Go TB!!

Will Brew-rack Obama be the new Sam Adams?

Posted By Marc Normandin On November 5, 2008 @ 2:21 pm In Culture, Food and Drink, The Issue | No Comments

Sam Adams is currently the most popular beer with a name based on a historical figure. With “Brew-rack Obama,” Duncan Remage-Healey and Brian Gravel are looking to change that.

There are plenty of people who brew their own beer, but far fewer of these industrious individuals attempt to use people’s love for the beverage to try to make a difference in their community. That is just what Remage-Healey and Gravel, the people behind Thunder Boomer, are attempting to do with their operation, though.

Remage-Healey and Gravel both work for Habitat for Humanity, and both are lovers of beer. They have combined these two elements into one idea, where the brewing and distribution of beer can be used to earn money for more socially oriented and charitable purposes. The brewery-which has no official base outside of the member’s homes-has not quite reached that stage yet, but they are working towards the goal.

Gravel is well aware of the hurdles in front of them, in trying to combine the sale of beer with charity, and they also would need to try to focus on creating a beer to establish themselves with rather than spending their time experimenting on creating new products. That has not stopped the flow of ideas on how to use their brewing skills to the advantage of the community. Gravel mentioned that they could use profits from beer sales to fund small-scale community projects, such as revamping a plot of land and turning it into a park to play in, or a dog park for your canine companions.

The money does not necessarily have to come from sales either; as Gravel mentioned, donations would suffice in lieu of paying for what is essentially a beer tab if Thunder Boomer ale was used to cater a party or gathering. As the operation has been done entirely out of the pockets of Gravel and Remage-Healey, this does not seem like too much to ask when there is a greater good involved.

This socially conscious line of thinking has taken strong hold of the northeastern United States as of late, with the influence of a market ready to accept those trends seen everywhere you look, from grocery choices such as Trader Joe’s to what Gravel and Remage-Healey hope their as of now small enterprise can develop into. With this region and the rest of the country more and more aware of how their actions influence the environment around them, and how even doing the little things can make a significant difference, the time is right for Thunder Boomer to try its hand at a market that clearly exists-beer drinkers who also double as socially conscious individuals.

If you have purchased alcohol lately, or even if you have just walked by the windows or your local distributor, you know what kind of money is involved in the business. Now, if that money could somehow be injected into the community, not only would you improve your surroundings, but you would be doing your part to help simply by cracking open a cold one, and that’s a good feeling to have-one Thunder Boomer hopes to capitalize on in the future.

The pair has developed a beer in time for election season as well, and they have named it for their candidate of choice, Barack Obama. The double IPA was dubbed “Brew-Rack Obama”, a nod to the Democratic Convention’s nominee-he was anointed thus the night Thunder Boomer brewed and bottled the brew. Whether the bottles will be opened in celebration or in mourning will be seen this coming Tuesday evening, when the winner of the general election is announced and the next President known.

Keeping the name Brew-Rack Obama could pose a problem eventually with licensing, but for now, it’s a tribute put together by a pair who hold both their love of beer and charity dear to them-the hope is that there are enough people out there with the same mindset that can help these Habitat employees make a difference in a community they care about.

Welcome to TBBC, Dylan!

Dylan Milli - welcome to the Thunder Boomer family!!!

There are a few things you should know, in no particular order:

1. Thunder Boomer has a way of doing things. If you spend time with your father, Uncle Boomer, and Big Brother, you will learn these ways. I recommend you embrace them, as they will keep you happy and prosperous throughout life.
2. Beer is your friend. It can't hurt you.
3. The hoppier the better - in beer and in life (I have not idea what that means)
4. If you love TBBC, TBBC will always love you.

We're psyched you're here, kiddo, let the fun begin!!

Lazy Brewskie

We at TBBC have been distracted by major life events (children, nuptials) and have been lazy bloggers of late. Here is an attempt at a brief run down of recent events, in an attempt to preserve the story of Thunder Boomer.

August 28, 2008 - Brew-rack Obama Ale

Gathered at the Boomer Dome to brew an IPA and listen to the official acceptance speech of the first African-American nominee for the presidency - hence the name of the beer. The recipe was a clone of Victory's Hop Devil with a significant amount of Cascade and Centennial hops. This beer was fermented with Safale yeast and dry hopped with an 1 ounce of Cascade. Bottled two weeks later, this bugger will be a delicious accompanyment to the November 4th festivities.

September 28, 2008 - Break Water ESB

Thunder is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new Rook and to pass the time, he cranked out an ESB. He will need to offer details of the recipe, as Boomer was not present.

In other news...

The Rook has expressed interest in returning to TBBC as an active participant. Seeing as though a new Rook is around the corner, The Rook has been renamed "Big Brother". More on that later...or not.
